The energy was high and the mood was one of expectant triumph Saturday as Democrats from all over Broward met to do lunch with Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay.

The luncheon honored all Democratic Club presidents and helped kick off MacKay's future gubernatorial campaign. The party was held at Celebrations of Plantation, and it ushered in a slate of new officers for the Democratic Club's Council of Presidents.

The Democratic gubernatorial primaries are not until September 1998, but MacKay is wasting no time. He has been in South Florida this past week, visiting Miami, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, trying to secure the Democratic nomination.

``You have to remember that Florida is almost as big as New York state,'' MacKay said. ``You can't assume that because you knew Florida four years ago, you know Florida now.''

Broward has been a longtime stronghold for Florida's Democratic Party, with the most registered Democrats in the state. But it is more than just potential power. Diane Glasser of the Broward National and State Committees said, ``Here in Broward we get our people to go to the ballot.''

If MacKay was looking for support, he went to the right place.

More than 250 people attended the luncheon -- some of them so energized, they performed the Macarena between courses.

``I believe that Buddy MacKay is the best candidate, as he has shown by his accomplishments as lieutenant governor,'' said Ira Subin, treasurer of the Hills Democratic Club.

The new Council of Democratic Club installed as officers: President Bea Schwartz of Davie; First Vice President Ely Wallenstein of Deerfield Beach; Second Vice President Mae Walberg Schreiber of Tamarac; Third Vice President Lori Glasser of Sunrise; Treasurer Frank Negron of Plantation; and Secretary Ari Porth of Coral Springs.
