School Lunch Really Does Make a Difference
The Early Writing Career of Deborah Schwartz
April 1988

"School Lunch Really Does Make a Difference" was Deborah Schwartz's first published article.

Schwartz was known to bring her own lunch to school, and had to do serious investigative research for this article. Use of phrases like "grody to the max" show Schwartz’s desire to employ the language of her peers, while paraphrased interviews with cafeteria ladies Mary R. and Mary S. illustrate her bourgeoning sympathy for working class individuals.

This issue of the Stirling Silver, was produced in the spring of Schwartz’s fifth grade year. All articles appearing in the publication were written on an Apple 2e from the computer room.

Other articles on the page include "About the Iowa Test" (a state-wide basic skills test), "The Week of the Ocean" (or "Ocean School Marine Fair"), and "Facts About AIDS" (which, though hard-hitting, appears to be copied directly from a more mature text.
